Gay life in the Country
Monday, November 10, 2008

It's been quite a while now since I've lived in the country and I often hear people from the GLBT community complaining of how tired of the gay village they are. I hear from some of them saying they would love to move to the country and I am sometimes surprised as to what they expect or don't expect it to find from it. So in this post, I will try to remember all the things I did like and yes I've probably forgotten quite a few.
So in no particular order...
-If you like gardening you will have all the room you need. You don't need to spend a small fortune amending the soil, just remember to grow things for your specific soil conditions.
-You don't need a litter box for your cat, they have the great outdoors. Although if you live in an area with cold winters, or heavy snow your cat will be spending most of their time indoors. Remember that 4 feet of snow is impossibly high for a cat and I've never heard of a cat that likes the cold.
-You can own more than one dog depending if their are bylaws or not, or what's in them.
-You are most likely to be living near water...lakes, streams or brooks and will have a great time swimming with your dogs, which are not allowed in public pools.
-You will become aware of the night sky, you will know what stars look like, as well as really come to appreciate a full moon. You will be very aware of the seasons of the year.
-You'll appreciate a little bit of snow, as it will illuminate the dark dark woods at night, especially in open fields.
-You will most likely learn all about car engines, plumbing, wells, building etc, even if you don't think so.
-If your car breaks down or gets stuck, someone will stop and help you.
-You will appreciate your neighbors and find that they are very important and help each other out.
-In December the nearest town will be decorated and look like a Christmas card.
-You can cut down your own Christmas tree if you live in an area where they grow. In some areas they grow really well and in others you may only find Charlie Brown type Christmas trees.
-You won't be spending a fortune at a depot center on ferns for your garden as most likely you will be digging up your own from the woods.
-You can own your own chickens (free range) and have fresh eggs everyday. It's a lot of work and won't save you money, but at least you will be eating healthier eggs...hopefully!
-You won't be confined to a backyard, you just refer to all the area behind your house as "in the back of the house".
-Most gay men like to exercise, so you will love jogging, hiking, cross-country skiing (maybe?) in the great outdoors with lots of fresh air.
-One of my favorites is that you can keep Koi in a pond outdoors, but you will have to learn all about keeping them and protecting them. I think they are one of the greatest unknown pets. You will love them, they are so friendly, they eat from your hands and you can even go in the water with them....all depending of what kind of pond of course. Don't forget though, if your thinking of bringing them indoors for the winter........you will need a really BIG tank.
